Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

All new clients can take advantage of our Introductory Offer. Simply leave your information in the contact form and we’ll contact you right away to learn about your dance goals and help you set up your first lesson.

Our instructors hail from all over the world and are actively competing professional dancers. All have completed the rigorous work required to become, and remain, certified ballroom dance instructors. Our instructors are dedicated to helping you discover the joy of ballroom dancing and to make your learning experience enjoyable, rewarding, and fun!

Absolutely not! We welcome singles and couples here. If you come in as one of our single students, your instructor will be your partner for private lessons, and our group classes and practice sessions will provide plenty of opportunities to meet other students with the same interests and goals!

We highly recommend that you schedule your lessons close together, especially in the beginning. The more closely you schedule your lessons, the the more information you will retain, and the more quickly you will gain confidence in your dancing. We also recommend private lessons in conjunction with group classes and practice sessions; the combination of all these forms of learning are the most effective and efficient way for you to learn and stay motivated.

We realize that some students arrive for lessons straight from work and others may be dressed more casually for their lessons – either is acceptable. The most important thing is to wear something comfortable, which allows you to move easily. Of course, you’ll also want to select comfortable shoes. We suggest leather-soled shoes and/or a shoe with a strap so that they won't fall off! Athletic shoes do not work well on dance floors because they stick, which will make it difficult to move your feet, as well as increase the risk of injury to ankles and knees; for the first few lessons, you can get away with it, but not for long! We can help you find the right dance shoe for you!

Our staff members are very busy, and their time is valuable. It can be difficult for them to fill a lesson time if the cancellation is at the last minute. To avoid any conflict, we have implemented the following cancellation policy:

*24 hours’ notice is required to cancel a private lesson; appointments canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged the full value of the lesson. Make-up lessons are offered as a courtesy and may be scheduled within the same business week (subject to instructor availability) at no additional charge. For cancellations occurring due to illness or injury, the make-up lesson may be taken during the same business week that lessons resume (in addition to regular lessons).

Please keep in mind that make-up lessons are subject to instructor availability and there may not be time available for a make-up lesson; in this instance, the missed lesson is considered forfeit. Students are responsible for ensuring their make-up lesson is scheduled. Make-up lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, as well as no-call/no-shows, will be considered forfeit.

We also ask that you arrive before your scheduled appointment to prepare for your lesson. We regret that late arrivals will result in reduced service time in order for instructors to maintain their schedule with other clients.

*Lessons scheduled outside of normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM) or on federal holidays are not eligible for make-up lessons.

Group classes are offered at no additional cost during the same week that a private lesson is taken. This enhancement allows our students to experience the benefits of both personalized instruction & collaborative learning. Group classes provide a dynamic & fun environment where students can engage with their peers & develop their skills together. By combining the individual attention of private lessons with the social & educational aspects of group classes, we aim to provide a comprehensive learning experience that fosters growth, creativity, & a sense of community among our students.

For students not enrolled in a private lesson program, drop-in rates and group class packages are available.

*Please note that group classes with fewer than 3 attendees will be taught as a 20-minute session*

To ensure we can reserve your lesson time, kindly note that lessons must be prepaid (or a credit card placed on file) at least 48 hours in advance. Unfortunately, lessons that are not prepaid within this window may be subject to cancellation to accommodate other students.

Wedding Questions

Your wedding day is a celebration of your love and commitment. Everything you’re planning - the venue, meal, apparel, floral arrangements, music, and more will be a reflection of your style and personality, and your first dance is no exception. For many couples, the first dance can be a nerve-wracking experience, but with guidance from our expert staff, you’ll have the skills and confidence to impress your guests and create treasured memories. Dance lessons are also a great way to have fun and relax before your wedding day. With all the decisions and deadlines involved in wedding planning, enjoying this time together can help you both de-stress and build essential skills for a happy marriage!
Our Wedding Dance programs are customized to you – each couple has a different style & personality as well as preferences for their first dance. Our instructors can teach everything from a few simple dance steps to a challenging routine; it all depends on what you're looking for!
If you’re reading this now, it’s probably time to get started! A typical engaged couple's schedule can become pretty busy; we recommend getting started at least 5-6 months before your wedding. This will give you plenty of time for scheduling lessons and to truly feel confident with your dance. Of course, we can help couples who have less time available, too, but we encourage as much time as possible to allow you to get comfortable on the dance floor and to practice as much as you are able to squeeze in!
We recommend sitting down for a complimentary consultation where we’ll discuss your wants and needs for your wedding dance. We highly encourage you to have your song narrowed down, an idea of the size of the venue's dance floor, and photos of your wedding attire. If you have examples of dance videos you like online, we'd be happy to incorporate some elements into your personalized dance. Each piece of information you can share helps us understand your vision for your wedding and allows us to create a clear plan to achieve your goals.
We can help you find the right dance shoe for you!
While wedding shoes are a beautiful accessory for your wedding attire, they are not always designed for comfort or movement. We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes (something that will not fall off your feet) for the first couple of lessons so that you can focus on learning the steps as opposed to staying balanced! You can bring your wedding shoes (or something similar), or a photo of your shoes to your first dance lesson so your instructor can help you determine whether you can comfortably dance in them, or whether you should consider a pair of ballroom dancing shoes. Your friends and family won’t even notice the switch – but you’ll be so much more comfortable! As far as clothing goes, we recommend something comfortable for the first couple of lessons, and then to try out clothing similar to your wedding attire once you feel more confident with the choreography. We suggest that you bring a pair of dress shoes and a suit jacket or bring a long skirt and your wedding day shoes. Anything similar to your wedding day attire will help you get comfortable!
Your First Dance will be 100% uniquely yours; we choreograph each routine specifically for the couple and song choice. No two couples are the same, so no two dances are the same! At In Motion Ballroom, we are experts in all styles of ballroom dance – and can incorporate one or more of them into your choreography. We can help you select a dance that matches your first dance song, but if you have something in mind definitely let us know. Whatever you decide, we’ll be there to help make your first dance as a married couple completely yours!
