LEARN TO DANCE

8 Weeks. 2 Dances. 1 New Skill for Life.

Start dancing. Build your foundation. Keep growing.

You’ve always wanted to learn to dance. Now you can.

Maybe you’ve watched other people dancing and thought, “I wish I could do that.”

Maybe you’ve never had the opportunity to learn.

Or maybe you’ve taken a class before and felt like everyone else somehow knew what they were doing.

Learn to Dance was created for you.

This eight-week beginner experience will introduce you to the fundamentals of social dancing in a fun, relaxed and encouraging environment.

No experience required. No dance background necessary.

Just come ready to learn.

What Will I Learn?

Rather than overwhelming you with dozens of dances, we've chosen two of the most versatile social dances to give you a strong foundation. The AMERICAN RUMBA is a smooth, relaxed and incredibly versatile, and a wonderful introduction to partner dancing that works beautifully with a wide variety of slower music. The DISCO/HUSTLE is a fun, energetic and social dance to upbeat music and introduces turns, fun patterns, and strong partner connection in a lively format. But we're not just teaching you steps!

Beyond the Steps

You'll also learn how to find the beat, base elements of dancing (whether solo or with a partner), keep time, lead or follow, connect with your partner, turn comfortably, combine patterns, dance continuously, adapt to unfamiliar music, and recover gracefully when something goes wrong. Knowing steps is one thing, but knowing how to dance is another!

Who are these classes for?

You! Whether you're a complete beginner, looking for a fun hobby, preparing for weddings, cruises or social events, or simply tired of sitting on the sidelines when the music starts, this program is designed to give you a comfortable place to start. And yes—you can come without a partner.

What makes this different from your normal group classes?

This isn't an ongoing drop-in class. It's an 8-week experience. You'll begin with the same group, learn together, build your skills week by week and finish with a celebration of everything you've learned. You'll know where you're starting. You'll know where you're going. And by the end, you'll have a foundation you can continue building for years to come.

Absolutely! Learn to Dance was created specifically for beginners. You don't need any previous dance experience—we'll start with the fundamentals and build your skills step by step.

You don't need to be naturally coordinated to learn to dance.

We'll break everything down into manageable steps and give you plenty of opportunities to practice. You don't have to be good at dancing to start—you just have to start.

Walking into a dance studio for the first time can feel intimidating, which is why we've designed this program specifically to make getting started easy. You'll be learning alongside other beginners in a relaxed, supportive environment.

No! You are welcome to register on your own. We'll structure the class so that everyone has the opportunity to practice with different partners throughout the program. If you're registering with a partner, you'll also have plenty of opportunities to dance together.

*Please note: if you are not comfortable switching partners throughout the class, private lessons are recommended!

You'll learn American Rumba and Disco/Hustle—two versatile social dances that can be used with a wide variety of music and at many different types of events.

You'll also learn the fundamentals of rhythm, timing, leading and following, turns, partner connection, and how to combine patterns so you can actually dance socially rather than simply memorize steps.

Because the goal isn't to overwhelm you with a dozen dances in eight weeks.

Instead, we'll use two versatile dances to help you develop the fundamental skills of social dancing. Once you understand rhythm, connection, leading, following and how to combine patterns, those skills can be applied to many other dances.

Not at all. The program is designed for adult beginners of all ages. If you've always wanted to learn, this is a great place to start.

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move easily. You don't need a special dance outfit for class.

For shoes, choose something comfortable that stays securely on your foot and allows you to move easily. Dance shoes are not required for the program. Comfortable shoes with a smooth enough sole to allow you to turn and move are a good place to start. Leave the flip-flops at home!

Because this is a progressive 8-week program, each class builds on what you've learned previously. We encourage you to attend all eight sessions whenever possible.

If you miss a class and would like to catch up, scheduling a private lesson is the best course of action, but completely up to you!

No. Learn to Dance is a progressive 8-week program, so the group begins together and moves through the curriculum together. Enrollment closes once the program begins.

That's exactly what we hope happens!

After completing Learn to Dance, you can continue developing your skills through private lessons, group classes, practice opportunities, and other programs at In Motion Ballroom.

The first eight weeks teach you how to dance. Where you take it from there is up to you.

By the end of the program, you'll be able to confidently dance a full song with a partner using the Rumba and Hustle patterns you've learned. More importantly, you'll understand how to find the beat, lead or follow, connect patterns, turn, and keep dancing even when the music or pattern changes.

The goal isn't to memorize choreography. It's to teach you how to dance.

Everyone learns at a different pace, so there isn't a single answer to what you'll be able to do after eight weeks—and becoming a comfortable, confident social dancer takes time, practice and repetition.

This program is designed to give you the tools and foundation you'll need to continue developing as a dancer. You'll be introduced to American Rumba and Disco/Hustle, along with fundamental concepts like rhythm, timing, partner connection, leading and following, and basic patterns.

You should not expect to master these skills in eight weeks. Learning to dance is a process, and the more consistently you practice, the more naturally these skills will develop.

Think of Learn to Dance as your first step—not the finish line.

The students who make the most progress are the ones who continue practicing between classes, repeating what they've learned and consistently putting in the effort. Just like learning any new skill, repetition and consistency are what turn new movements into natural ones.
